BRIAN Graf was considering not entering The Hills region’s biggest gardening competition, but instantly entered when he was reminded about how good the competition is.

Every year, The Hills-Kellyville Rotary Club’s Sydney Hills Garden Competition is not just an opportunity to show off his amazing gardens, but also get different feedback from judges and fresh ideas from other avid gardening enthusiasts.

“There are new judges every year who always provide different feedback,” Mr Graf said. “I also enjoy going to the presentation night and seeing the slideshow of other entrants and see what other people do with their gardens.”

Gardening has always been a passion for Mr Graf.

It started from mowing the lawns and keeping the garden in good condition while growing up at his parent’s house, and he helped his grandmother, who recently moved out of her home, with her garden.

Starting with a blank canvas after he purchased his Kellyville home, he has transformed his backyard and created multiple spots in the area for relaxation.

“I wanted to create a zig-zag effect through the back garden,” Mr Graf said.

“There is a couple of spots where I can sit and talk to my grandchildren or have a coffee.”

He also added a succulents section to his back garden, and maintains his front garden and side wall, which faces towards a walking trail.

Mr Graf, who was named the most outstanding gardener in 2015, is encouraging gardeners to showcase their work in this year’s competition.

“When I first entered my garden, I thought it wasn’t up to scratch but I got great feedback,” he said.

“Keith Stapley, Hills Rotary and the council are doing a lot to help lift the profile of the competition.”

There are a range of categories, including residential garden, townhouse/unit/courtyard garden, new garden, senior citizen’s garden, school garden, good neighbouring gardens, and specialty garden.

Registrations close on September 8, with judges beginning to inspect properties on September 11. The winners will be announced on September 22.
